Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Glenwood Cemetery and Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site. For shopping fun, head to Museum of Printing History or MiArt Gallery. Get out of town with these interesting Houston side-trips: Big Thicket National Preserve (in Kountze), W. G. There's much more to do: take a peaceful walk through Blue Elbow Swamp, immerse yourself in nature at Lake Texana State Park, identify plant and animal life at Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary, and admire the natural beauty at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center.
