Washington DC — 56 nights

The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to National Museum of African American History and Culture and Capitol Hill. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Smithsonian Institution Building. Venture out of the city with trips to Gari Melchers Home and Studio (in Falmouth), Spotsylvania (Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center & Harris Farm Battlefield) and Weems-Botts Museum (in Dumfries). Spend the 28th (Wed) exploring nature at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. There's still lots to do: identify plant and animal life at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, witness the site of a historic battle at Manassas National Battlefield Park, tour the pleasant surroundings at U.S. National Arboretum, and see the interesting displays at Virginia Holocaust Museum.
