Visit San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site and Lakewood Church for their historical value. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Washington-on-the-Brazos and George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Houston: Reveille Gravesite (in College Station), Blue Bell Creameries (in Brenham) and Battleship Texas State Historic Site (in La Porte). There's still lots to do: immerse yourself in nature at Brazos Bend State Park, see the interesting displays at The Houston Museum of Natural Science, don't miss a visit to Water Wall, and have fun and explore at Children's Museum of Houston.
