Alaska Starts Here

For most visitors to this part of the world, the wild part of Alaska starts at Seward, a small port city that takes advantage of the region's natural beauty.
Kick off your visit on the 12th (Tue): explore the wealth of natural beauty at Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center. Here are some ideas for day two: meet the residents at Alaska SeaLife Center, then take in the dramatic natural features at Exit Glacier, then contemplate the waterfront views at Resurrection Bay, and finally see the world from above with a helicopter tour.

Washington DC to Seward is an approximately 15.5-hour combination of flight and bus. You can also drive. You'll gain 4 hours traveling from Washington DC to Seward due to the time zone difference. While traveling from Washington DC, expect much colder days and little chillier nights in Seward, ranging from highs of 48°F to lows of 37°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Whittier.

Whittier

Whittier is a city at the head of the Passage Canal in the U.S. Start off your visit on the 14th (Thu): examine the collection at Prince William Sound Museum and then tour the old-fashioned way with Phillips Cruises and Tours.

Getting from Seward to Whittier by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a bus; or take a train. In October in Whittier, expect temperatures between 44°F during the day and 33°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Thu) early enough to drive to Anchorage.

The City of Lights and Flowers

Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Fri): get engrossed in the history at Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, then examine the collection at Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, and then look for all kinds of wild species at Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary.

Traveling by car from Whittier to Anchorage takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In October, plan for daily highs up to 45°F, and evening lows to 32°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
