Hilo — 2 nights

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Family-friendly places like Akaka Falls State Park and Imiloa Astronomy Center will thrill your kids. Venture out of the city with trips to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Devastation Trail & Kilauea Iki Trailhead). There's much more to do: admire the natural beauty at Liliuokalani Gardens, take in the dramatic scenery at Rainbow Falls, examine the collection at Pacific Tsunami Museum, and get a taste of the local shopping with Hilo Farmers Market.

Kailua-Kona — 3 nights

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
On the 22nd (Sun), tour the pleasant surroundings at Puukohola National Historic Park, then immerse yourself in nature at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, and then see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 23rd (Mon): look for gifts at Big Island Bees, then explore the striking landscape of Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, and then Head underground at Kula Kai Caverns.

You can drive from Hilo to Kailua-Kona in 2 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Hilo in May since evenings lows in Kailua-Kona dip to 73°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 24th (Tue) to allow time for the flight back home.
