Galveston — 5 nights

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Galveston is known for historic sites, museums, and parks. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: admire the natural beauty at Moody Gardens, get in on the family fun at Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, get to know the fascinating history of The Seawall, and take a stroll through The Strand.

For reviews, traveler tips, more things to do, and tourist information, refer to the Galveston tour itinerary planner.

Austin to Galveston is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Austin in June, expect nights in Galveston to be about the same, around 78°F, while days are slightly colder, around 88°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) so you can fly back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
