The Oleander City

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Venture out of the city with trips to Kemah (Stingray Reef 215 Kipp Ave, Kemah Boardwalk, &more). And it doesn't end there: get to know the fascinating history of The Seawall, take an in-depth tour of Galveston Historic Seaport - Home of the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA, make a trip to Galveston's 61st Street Fishing Pier, and contemplate the long history of Moody Mansion.

Austin to Galveston is an approximately 4-hour car ride. You can also fly; or take a bus. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Austin in March since evenings lows in Galveston dip to 60°F. You'll have a few hours on the 19th (Fri) to wrap things up before traveling home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
