Monterey is a city in the U.S. state of California, on the southern edge of Monterey Bay on California's Central Coast. Change things up with these side-trips from Monterey: Santa Cruz (UCSC Arboretum, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, &more), Eden Rift Vineyards (in Hollister) and Carmel Valley (Joullian Vineyards & Winery, Cima Collina, &more). New York City to Monterey is an approximately 8-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. The time zone difference moving from Eastern Standard Time to Pacific Standard Time is minus 3 hours. Traveling from New York City in July, things will get a bit cooler in Monterey: highs are around 69°F and lows about 55°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Sat) so you can drive to San Simeon.

San Simeon — 8 nights

When you arriveĀ in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Step out of San Simeon with an excursion to Camp Roberts Historical Museum in San Miguel--about 44 minutes away. There's still lots to do: explore the historical opulence of Hearst Castle, explore and take pictures at Moonstone Beach Dr, get a dose of the wild on Stepladder Ranch & Creamery, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Moonstone Beach.

You can drive from Monterey to San Simeon in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus, train, and taxi; or do a combination of bus and car. When traveling from Monterey in July, plan for much hotter days and about the same nights in San Simeon: temperatures range from 94°F by day to 56°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Arroyo Grande.

Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Mon) so you can travel to Santa Barbara.
