Custer

Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Wildlife Loop Road and Sylvan Lake. Take a break from the city and head to Needles Eye Tunnel and Presidential Trail. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Custer: Mammoth Site of Hot Springs (in Hot Springs), Windcross Conservancy (in Buffalo Gap) and Wind Cave National Park (in Wind Cave National Park). Spend the 20th (Thu) exploring the underground world of Jewel Cave National Monument.
