Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Start off your visit on the 20th (Mon): stroll through Wells Beach, then identify plant and animal life at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, and then pause for some serene contemplation at St. Ann's Episcopal Church. On the 22nd (Wed), steep yourself in history at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, examine the collection at Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House, and then visit a coastal fixture at Chandler Hovey Park.
