Perched at the northern end of Washington's Pacific coast, the mid-sized city of Bellingham serves as an important stopover on the road between Seattle and Vancouver.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Mt Baker and Fairhaven Stones Throw Brewery. Get out of town with these interesting Bellingham side-trips: New Dungeness Lighthouse (in Sequim), Coupeville (Admiralty Head Lighthouse & Fort Casey State Park) and Schack Art Center (in Everett). There's still lots to do: hike along Whatcom Falls Park, look for gifts at Village Books, sample the fine beverages at Chuckanut Bay Distillery, and steep yourself in history at Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

In January, daily temperatures in Bellingham can reach 46°F, while at night they dip to 34°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
