For most people, any mention of Orlando immediately conjures up images of sprawling theme parks filled with characters plucked right out of popular animated movies.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to St. Augustine Beach and Beach at Daytona Beach. Explore Orlando's surroundings by going to Stetson Mansion (in DeLand) and Dolphin & Whale Watching (in St. Augustine). Have a day of magic on the 24th (Sat) at Walt Disney World Resort. Sacramento to Orlando is an approximately 7.5-hour flight. You can also fly; or drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Sacramento to Orlando, you'll lose 3 hours due to the time zone difference. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Sacramento in December: highs in Orlando hover around 77°F, while lows dip to 59°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 24th (Sat) early enough to travel to Marathon.

Marathon — 1 night

A tiny city just 16 km (10 mi) long, Marathon is spread across several islands in the middle of the Florida Keys.
On the 25th (Sun), enjoy the sand and surf at Sombrero Beach and then enjoy the sand and surf at Bahia Honda State Park.

Getting from Orlando to Marathon by combination of flight and bus takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of flight and bus; or drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Orlando in December, Marathon is a bit warmer at night with lows of 71°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Sun) so you can drive to Sanibel Island.

Sanibel Island — 2 nights

Take a trip to Sanibel Island if you like pretty sunsets and luxurious resorts.
Start off your visit on the 26th (Mon): enjoy the sand and surf at Captiva Beach and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Bowman's Beach. On the 27th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: enjoy the sand and surf at Blind Pass Beach Park and then take a memorable drive along Sanibel Causeway.

Drive from Marathon to Sanibel Island in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight, bus, and taxi; or do a combination of bus, ferry, and taxi. Traveling from Marathon in December, plan for a bit cooler nights in Sanibel Island, with lows around 62°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Tue) early enough to catch the flight back home.
