The Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains

Discover out-of-the-way places like Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and Tennessee Shine Company - Gatlinburg. Hollywood Star Cars Museum and Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community will appeal to museum buffs. Lansing — 1 night

Kick off your visit on the 30th (Tue): steep yourself in history at R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, then get a sense of history and politics at Michigan State Capitol, and then pause for some serene contemplation at Central United Methodist Church. Here are some ideas for day two: make a trip to 9-11-2001 Remembrance Memorial, hike along River Trail, then deepen your understanding at Michigan State University, and finally stop by Horrocks Farm Market.

Traveling by flight from Gatlinburg to Lansing takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of taxi, shuttle, and bus. Plan for little chillier temperatures traveling from Gatlinburg in May, with highs in Lansing at 70°F and lows at 48°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Wed) so you can drive back home.
