Known for its Creole cuisine, rich musical tradition, and nearby swamps and plantations, New Orleans is one of the nation's oldest cities.
Garden District and French Quarter will appeal to history buffs. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. There's lots more to do: brush up on your military savvy at The National WWII Museum, examine the collection at Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, get a taste of the local shopping with Frenchmen Street, and stroll through New Orleans City Park.

Dallas to New Orleans is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and car; or drive. While traveling from Dallas, expect little chillier days and somewhat warmer nights in New Orleans, ranging from highs of 61°F to lows of 61°F. Vacherie is a small unincorporated community in St. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Oak Alley Plantation and Madewood Plantation. Do some cultural sightseeing at Laura Plantation: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site and Whitney Plantation. Get out of town with these interesting Vacherie side-trips: Houmas House Plantation and Gardens (in Darrow), River Road African-American Museum (in Donaldsonville) and Nottoway Plantation (in White Castle). The adventure continues: contemplate the long history of San Francisco Plantation and experience rural life at St. Joseph Plantation.
