Mammoth Lakes — 2 nights

Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County, California, the county's only incorporated community. When in Mammoth Lakes, make a side trip to see Tioga Rd in Lee Vining, approximately Lee Vining away. Next up on the itinerary: take in the dramatic natural features at Devils Postpile National Monument, take in the dramatic scenery at Rainbow Falls, explore the activities along Convict Lake, and grab your bike and head to Mammoth Mountain Bike Park.

Tahoe City — 4 nights

Tahoe City is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. Venture out of the city with trips to Incline Village (Sand Harbor & UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center) and Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum (in Truckee). There's much more to do: let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour, cruise along Inspiration Point Vista, trek along Eagle Falls Trail, and let little ones run wild at Commons Beach Park.

You can drive from Mammoth Lakes to Tahoe City in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Mammoth Lakes in July, plan for slightly colder nights in Tahoe City, with lows around 40°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Fri) to allow enough time to fly back home.
