Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Durango Dog Ranch and Ouray Ice Park. Get out of town with these interesting Durango side-trips: Idarado Mine (in Silverton) and Ouray Alchemist Museum (in Ouray). There's lots more to do: fly down the slopes at The Snowbike Experience, don't miss a visit to Historic Downtown Durango, take in the exciting artwork at Toh-Atin Gallery, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Purgatory Resort.
