South Dakota's second-largest city, Rapid City has for many years served as a gateway to the West.
Kids will enjoy Bear Country USA and Storybook Island. Change things up with these side-trips from Rapid City: Crazy Horse Memorial (in Crazy Horse), Mount Rushmore National Memorial (in Keystone) and Custer (Sylvan Lake & Custer State Park). Pack the 19th (Tue) with family-friendly diversions at Rushmore Tramway Adventures. There's still lots to do: get to know the resident critters at Reptile Gardens and take a stroll through Downtown Rapid City.
