Rocky Mountain High

Known as a ski resort town, Aspen's history goes back to its roots as a silver-mining village tucked away in an isolated valley of the Rocky Mountains.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to River Rafting & Tubing and Crater Lake Trail. Get outdoors at Off-Road Tours and Glenwood Canyon Bike Trail. And it doesn't end there: tour the pleasant surroundings at Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, stroll around The John Denver Sanctuary, look for gifts at Explore Booksellers, and trek along Lost Man Trail.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz remains synonymous with surfing, but this counterculture bastion offers plenty even if you don't plan to catch any waves.
Step off the beaten path and head to Carmel River State Beach and Lovers Point. Take a break from the city and head to Asilomar State Beach and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Venture out of the city with trips to Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail (in Monterey), Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (in Moss Landing) and Pezzini Farms (in Castroville). There's much more to do: get a dose of the wild on Elkhorn Slough Safari, take in the waterfront at Carmel Beach Boardwalk, kick back and relax at Capitola Beach, and admire the striking features of Boardwalk's Cocoanut Grove.
