Bismarck is the capital of the U.S. Your inner history buff will appreciate Assumption Abbey and Custer House. Explore hidden gems such as Stutsman County Memorial Museum and Dickinson Museum Center. Venture out of the city with trips to Audubon National Wildlife Refuge Complex (in Coleharbor), Washburn (Fort Mandan & The North Dakota Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center) and Dinosaurs of the Prairie (in Napoleon). There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, steep yourself in history at On-A-Slant Village, get curious at Gateway to Science, and meet the residents at The Dakota Zoo.

For photos, reviews, more things to do, and more tourist information, read our Bismarck driving holiday planner.

In August, plan for daily highs up to 82°F, and evening lows to 56°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
