Honolulu, Oahu

— 2 nights

Big Pineapple

In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Honolulu is known for historic sites, wildlife, and beaches. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: stroll the grounds of USS Arizona Memorial, let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, kick back and relax at Waikiki Beach, and see the interesting displays at USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park.

To find traveler tips, maps, where to stay, and tourist information, go to the Honolulu trip itinerary builder tool.

Minneapolis to Honolulu is an approximately 9.5-hour flight. The time zone changes from Central Standard Time (CST) to Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST), which is usually a -4 hour difference. Traveling from Minneapolis in December, expect Honolulu to be warmer, temps between 82°F and 69°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) to allow enough time to fly to Lahaina.

Volcano, Island of Hawaii

— 2 nights
Those who named Volcano opted for simplicity in choosing a title, taking the nearby fire-spewing Kilauea as a source of inspiration.
Start off your visit on the 30th (Thu): pick up some local products at Hilo Farmers Market, admire the natural beauty at Liliuokalani Gardens, then admire the sheer force of Rainbow Falls, then hike along Sulphur Banks, and finally take a memorable drive along Devastation Trail. Keep things going the next day: shop like a local with Volcano Art Center Gallery, then trek along Kilauea Iki Trailhead, then hike along Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park) Trail, and finally see the interesting displays at Jagger Museum.

To find maps, where to stay, reviews, and more tourist information, refer to the Volcano trip itinerary maker site.

Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii

— 2 nights

Heart of the Kona Coast

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
On the 1st (Sat), look for all kinds of wild species at Kona Cloud Forest, take in the spiritual surroundings of Mokuaikaua Church, then take a tour by water with Boat Tours & Water Sports, and finally wander the streets of Kailua Pier.

The Aloha State
An archipelago of hundreds of volcanic islands located in a geological hot spot in the middle of Pacific, Hawaii offers diverse natural scenery and a warm tropical climate. The six major islands open to tourism draw visitors with their sun-drenched public beaches and craggy natural trails. Thanks to their mid-Pacific location, the islands boast a vibrant native culture influenced by both North America and Asia. You can spend your vacation basking in the modern comforts of the big hotels, but to experience the true spirit of these islands, remember that real Hawaiians live outdoors. Encounter nature by surfing, swimming, fishing, and picnicking, or join a guided tour across the ancient lava flows to the top of Hawaii's rugged volcanic peaks.
