One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Visiting Kīlauea and Kaumana Caves Park will get you outdoors. Step off the beaten path and head to Richardson Beach Park and Wailuku River State Park. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Hilo: Pahoa (Lava Tree State Park & Kapoho Tide Pools) and Kilauea Iki Trailhead (in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park).
