America's Wettest City

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Venture out of the city with trips to Kailua-Kona (Kailua Pier, Swim with Dolphins, &more) and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Keanakakoi Crater Overlook, Volcano Art Center Gallery, &more). There's lots more to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Akaka Falls State Park, relax and rejuvenate at Honomu Goat Dairy, explore and take pictures at Saddle Road, and see the world from above with a helicopter tour.

Washington to Hilo is an approximately 16.5-hour flight. The time zone difference when traveling from Washington to Hilo is minus 5 hours. In July, plan for daily highs up to 85°F, and evening lows to 71°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Mon) to allow time to drive to Puako.

Puako is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. On the 6th (Tue), kick back and relax at Mauna Kea Beach, kick back and relax at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, and then add some adventure to your tour with Hawai'i Surf and Kayak.

Traveling by car from Hilo to Puako takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In July, daily temperatures in Puako can reach 86°F, while at night they dip to 76°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Naalehu.

Naalehu

Naalehu is a census-designated place in Hawaii County, Hawaii. Start off your visit on the 7th (Wed): stroll around Punalu‘U Beach, enjoy the sea views from Ka Lae Light, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Papakōlea Green Sand Beach, and finally take in the dramatic natural features at Kula Kai Caverns.

You can drive from Puako to Naalehu in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. When traveling from Puako in July, plan for a bit cooler days in Naalehu, with highs around 73°F, while nights are much colder with lows around 50°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Wed) so you can travel back home.

The Big Island
