Known for its Creole cuisine, rich musical tradition, and nearby swamps and plantations, New Orleans is one of the nation's oldest cities.
Step off the beaten path and head to Old New Orleans Rum Distillery and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Your inner history buff will appreciate Lake Lawn Metairie and Hermann-Grima House. When in New Orleans, make a side trip to see Whitney Plantation in Wallace, approximately 54 minutes away. There's much more to do: admire the masterpieces at The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at NOMA, paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour, pause for some serene contemplation at Old St. Patrick's Church, and wander the streets of Faubourg Marigny.
