Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Step off the beaten path and head to Needles Highway and Wind Cave National Park. Visiting Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Black Hills National Forest will get you outdoors. Change things up with these side-trips from Custer: Hot Springs (Mammoth Site of Hot Springs & The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary), Elk Mountain Nature Trail (in Wind Cave National Park) and Keystone (Professor Samuel's Portrait Emporium & Black Hills Helicopters). There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic natural features at Needles Eye Tunnel, take in the awesome beauty at Black Elk Peak, trot along with a tour on horseback, and take a memorable tour with Black Hills Balloons.
