On the 29th (Thu), enjoy the sea views from Bodie Island Lighthouse, take in the dramatic natural features at Jockey's Ridge State Park, and then explore the galleries of Wright Brothers National Memorial.

The center of Cherokee culture in the eastern part of the country, the town named after this Native American tribe serves as a base camp for hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Start off your visit on the 30th (Fri): try to win big at Casino at Harrah’s Cherokee, let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour, and then view the masterpieces at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 31st (Sat): see the interesting displays at Museum of the Cherokee Indian, examine the collection at Wheels Through Time Transportation Museum, and then take in the dramatic scenery at Dry Falls.

You can do a combination of car and flight from Nags Head to Cherokee in 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of car, bus, and taxi. Plan for slightly colder nights when traveling from Nags Head in August since evenings lows in Cherokee dip to 19°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Sat) early enough to go by car to Asheville.

Asheville nestles between two major mountain ranges in the scenic western section of North Carolina.
