A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.

Keep things going the next day: appreciate the history behind Astoria Column, contemplate the waterfront views at Columbia River Maritime Museum, and then take in the views from Astoria-Megler Bridge.

Newport — 3 nights

A town that survives on the sea, Newport's population of just over 10,000 supports a healthy commercial fishing industry.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Yachats coastline and Hatfield Marine Science Center. Step out of Newport with an excursion to Cape Perpetua Visitor Center - Siuslaw National Forest in Yachats--about 42 minutes away. The adventure continues: take in the waterfront at Newport's Historic Bayfront, enjoy the sea views from Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.
