City of Roses

A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Kids will enjoy Portland Japanese Garden and International Rose Test Garden. Explore Portland's surroundings by going to Multnomah Falls (in Bridal Veil) and Cannon Beach (Cannon Beach History Center and Museum, Haystack Rock, &more). There's lots more to do: look for gifts at Powell's City of Books, make a trip to Pittock Mansion, identify plant and animal life at Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Oregon Zoo.

Gateway to the Black Hills

South Dakota's second-largest city, Rapid City has for many years served as a gateway to the West.
Attractions like Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Reptile Gardens make great kid-friendly stops. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Rapid City: Custer (Custer State Park & Wildlife Loop Road), Devils Tower (Tower Trail & Devils Tower National Monument) and Crazy Horse Memorial (in Crazy Horse).
