Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.

You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Footbridge Beach and St. Anthony's Monastery. Visit Marginal Way Walkway and Portland Breakwater Lighthouse for their historical value. Explore Portland's surroundings by going to Ogunquit (Perkins Cove, Ogunquit Memorial Library, &more), Gooch's Beach (in Kennebunk) and Wells Reserve at Laudholm (in Wells). There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Agamenticus, kick back and relax at Kennebunk Beach, steep yourself in history at Wadsworth-Longfellow House, and stop by High Street Historic District.
