For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.

Step out of the city life by going to Sun Bay and Media Luna Beach. The adventure continues: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, enjoy the sand and surf at Caracas Beach, take in the waterfront at Malecon, and identify plant and animal life at Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.

Phoenix, USA to Isla de Vieques is an approximately 11.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight, shuttle, and ferry; or do a combination of bus and flight. The time zone difference when traveling from Phoenix to Isla de Vieques is 3 hours. Expect slightly colder temperatures when traveling from Phoenix in July; daily highs in Isla de Vieques reach 88°F and lows reach 79°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sat) so you can travel to Culebra.

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.

On the 14th (Sun), enjoy the sea views from Culebrita Lighthouse and then stroll through Flamenco Beach. On the 15th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: step off the mainland to explore Culebrita Island, then enjoy the sand and surf at Zoni Beach, and then kick back and relax at Playa Punta Soldado Beach.

Traveling by combination of car and flight from Isla de Vieques to Culebra takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In July, daytime highs in Culebra are 90°F, while nighttime lows are 80°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Mon) to allow time to fly to San Juan.

San Juan is very close to Culebra. In July, daily temperatures in San Juan can reach 89°F, while at night they dip to 78°F. On the 17th (Wed), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
