As the state’s second largest city, San Antonio embodies Texas’ rich cultural heritage while maintaining the Old West charm of an oil town.

Get out of town with these interesting San Antonio side-trips: Austin (South Congress Avenue, Texas State Capitol, &more) and Fredericksburg (Grape Creek Vineyards on Main, National Museum of the Pacific War, &more). Houston to San Antonio is an approximately 3.5-hour car ride. You can also take a bus; or fly. Traveling from Houston in January, expect little chillier with lows of 41°F in San Antonio. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 19th (Tue) to allow time for travel to Anchorage.

Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.

Start off your visit on the 20th (Wed): glide through natural beauty at Hillside Park, then admire nature's wide array of creatures at Alaska Zoo, and then identify plant and animal life at Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary.
