Capitol Reef National Park takes its name from a particularly rugged and scenic section of the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic "wrinkle" stretching for 160 km (100 mi) along a dry plateau surrounded by white Navajo sandstone cliffs and domes, and red canyons, buttes, and rock bridges.
Start off your visit on the 16th (Thu): trek along Grand Wash Trail, tour the pleasant surroundings at The Hickman Bridge Trail, and then trek along Goosenecks Overlook. On the 17th (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: don't miss a visit to Fremont Petroglyphs, steep yourself in history at Gifford Homestead, then make a trip to Grand Wash to Cassidy Arch, and finally contemplate the long history of Fruita Campground.

Plan for slightly colder temperatures traveling from Canyonlands National Park in May, with highs in Capitol Reef National Park at 63°F and lows at 31°F.
