Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Start off your visit on the 7th (Tue): examine the collection at Space Center Houston, make a trip to Water Wall, and then have some family-friendly fun at Escape Hunt.

As the state’s second largest city, San Antonio embodies Texas’ rich cultural heritage while maintaining the Old West charm of an oil town.
Start off your visit on the 8th (Wed): take in the architecture and atmosphere at San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral, get a taste of the local shopping with The San Antonio River Walk, contemplate the long history of The Alamo, then contemplate the long history of Mission San Jose, and finally walk around Friedrich Wilderness Park. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at The Guenther House Museum, explore the fascinating underground world of Natural Bridge Caverns, and then walk around Eisenhower Park.

Take a bus from Houston to San Antonio in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. Traveling from Houston in January, plan for little chillier nights in San Antonio, with lows around 41°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Thu) early enough to drive to Fredericksburg.
