Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is perhaps best known as the home of three of the United States' founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Frontier Culture Museum and James Monroe's Highland. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and University of Virginia are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Go for a jaunt from Charlottesville to Montpelier Station to see James Madison's Montpelier about 38 minutes away.
