The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.Family-friendly places like Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and Gettysburg National Military Park will thrill your kids. Get out of town with these interesting Washington DC side-trips: Gettysburg (Horseback Riding Tours & Victorian Photography Studio), Annapolis (Family Fishing Adventures & U.S. Naval Academy) and Roddy Road Covered Bridge (in Thurmont). There's still lots to do: examine the collection at National Air and Space Museum, get a sense of history and politics at Library of Congress, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, and appreciate the history behind National World War II Memorial.
