Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Museum of the Fur Trade and The Museum @ Black Hills Institute. Step off the beaten path and head to Cathedral Spires Hiking Trail and Angostura Recreation Area. When in Custer, make a side trip to see Granite Sports in Hill City, approximately 30 minutes away. On the 12th (Wed), explore the striking landscape at Big Badlands Overlook, tour the pleasant surroundings at Door Trail, then trek along Notch Trail, and finally explore the striking landscape of White River Valley Overlook. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take in the dramatic natural features at Yellow Mounds Overlook, then take in the dramatic natural features at Conata Basin Overlook, then take a memorable drive along Loop Road, and finally identify plant and animal life at Roberts Prairie Dog Town.
