Get a sense of the local culture at Historical Village, Vermeer Windmill & Scholte House and State Historical Museum. When in Des Moines, make a side trip to see Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and Prairie Learning Center in Prairie City, approximately Prairie City away. There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Valley Junction, do a tasting at La Vida Loca Winery, stop by East Village, and grab your bike and head to High Trestle Trail.
