Durango — 8 nights

Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Long House and The Anasazi Heritage Center. Family-friendly places like Off-Road Tours and Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum will thrill your kids. Get out of town with these interesting Durango side-trips: Majestic Dude Ranch (in Mancos), Mesa Verde National Park (Step House, Ruins Road, &more) and Canyons Of The Ancients Visitor Center & Museum (in Dolores). There's lots more to do: explore the landscape on two wheels at The Colorado Trail, kick your exploration up a notch at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks, get outside with Durango Dog Ranch, and take an in-depth tour of Animas Museum.
