One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Start off your visit on the 14th (Fri): enjoy the sand and surf at Richardson Beach Park. Keep things going the next day: look for gifts at Hilo Coffee Mill, hike along Sulphur Banks, then get impressive views of Kīlauea, and finally hike along Kilauea Iki Trailhead.

New York City to Hilo is an approximately 15.5-hour flight. You can also fly. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, which is usually a -5 hour difference. Traveling from New York City in February, things will get much hotter in Hilo: highs are around 81°F and lows about 65°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 17th (Mon) early enough to travel to Kapaa.

Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Kealia Farm Market and Hanalei Farmer’s Market. Escape the urban bustle at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and Ke'e Beach.
