Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kailua-Kona: Kealakekua Bay (in Captain Cook) and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park (in Honaunau). A vast agricultural land with one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, Waimea embraces its ranching roots.
Kick off your visit on the 1st (Wed): get great views at Waipiʻo Valley Lookout, stroll through Waipio Valley, then trot along with Na'alapa Stables - Waipio Valley, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Pololu Valley Lookout.

Getting from Kailua-Kona to Waimea by car takes about an hour. Other options: take a bus. When traveling from Kailua-Kona in June, plan for slightly colder days in Waimea, with highs around 71°F, while nights are colder with lows around 48°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Hilo.

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Change things up with these side-trips from Hilo: Jagger Museum (in Volcano) and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Kīlauea, Kilauea Iki Trailhead, & more). Traveling from Waimea in July, expect nights in Hilo to be much warmer, around 71°F, while days are a bit warmer, around 85°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 5th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
