Springfield is the capital of Illinois, but its real significance is as the hometown of Abraham Lincoln.
Appreciate the collections at Illinois State Military Museum and Wheels O' Time Museum. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Edwards Place Historic Home and Monticello Railway Museum. Explore Springfield's surroundings by going to Mackinaw Valley Vineyard (in Mackinaw), Lincoln Heritage Museum (in Lincoln) and Carthage (Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum & Carthage Jail). There's still lots to do: stroll the grounds of Camp Butler National Cemetery, examine the collection at National Great Rivers Museum, let little ones run wild at Meadowbrook Park, and explore the ancient world of Dickson Mounds Museum.

For other places to visit, photos, where to stay, and tourist information, you can read our Springfield day trip planner .

In May, daytime highs in Springfield are 76°F, while nighttime lows are 55°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel back home.
