The largest city on the Mississippi River, Memphis bills itself as both the "Birthplace of Rock" and "Home of the Blues." With such a rich musical heritage, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Elvis Presley chose to live in Memphis during his later years.
Start off your visit on the 27th (Fri): take an in-depth tour of National Civil Rights Museum - Lorraine Motel and then steep yourself in history at Sun Studio. Keep things going the next day: stroll the grounds of Memphis National Cemetery, then see the interesting displays at Graceland, then steep yourself in history at The Peabody Ducks, and finally make a trip to Beale Street.

Newark to Memphis is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or drive. The time zone difference moving from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Central Standard Time (CST) is minus 1 hour. Known as the capital of country music, the thriving city of Nashville combines old-world southern charm with a progressive urban flair.
Get a sense of the local culture at Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and Andrew Jackson's Hermitage. Visit Lotz House Museum and Belle Meade Plantation for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Nashville side-trips: Franklin (Carter House & Carnton). Drive from Memphis to Nashville in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or fly. Traveling from Memphis in September, plan for a bit cooler nights in Nashville, with lows around 62°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Chattanooga.
