Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
You've now added Buffalo Bayou Park to your itinerary. Kick off your visit on the 21st (Sun): identify plant and animal life at Armand Bayou Nature Center. On your second day here, look for all kinds of wild species at Gator Country and then identify plant and animal life at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge.

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Tue): wander the streets of East End Historic District. Keep things going the next day: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, then enjoy the sand and surf at Stewart Beach, and then take in panoramic vistas at Galveston's 61st Street Fishing Pier.
