White Sands National Monument, Alamogordo

4.8
Glistening white dunes at White Sands National Monument have mesmerized visitors for centuries. Marvel at 712 km (275 mi) of sparkling sand, the world’s largest dune field of rare gypsum. Begin your trip at the visitor center--an excellent example of Spanish pueblo-adobe architecture. From here you can set off on a 13 km (8 mi) scenic drive to the heart of the dunes. Stop along the way for short walks, wayside exhibits, and photos of the otherworldly views. You can also hike a variety of trails. Only the top few inches of the dunes are loose, making them easy to walk. Sledding is also a popular here. Bring a snow saucer or buy one from the gift shop to race down the sand slopes. No water is available in the dune field, so fill bottles at the visitor center. To visit White Sands National Monument and other attractions in Alamogordo, use our Alamogordo trip planning app .

  • This is a must do. We ended up getting here around 11:30. It was sunny and the wind was only about 5 MPH so it was picture perfect day. People were purchasing sleds and wax to sled down the sand dunes...  more »
  • Visitor center had very informative movie. We did sunset hike with ranger who explained a lot about the dunes.  more »

  • I Love Our National Parks! White Sands is amazing! The Ranger said it's not sand, but Gypsum in sand form! It's cool even on hot days! Bring SUNGLASSES, SUNSCREEN, WATER and snow disk and slide down the dunes. Bring your picnic, enjoy the day. There are individual canopied areas. I saw signs that stated horse unloading area. I saw people having fun, you'd think you were at the beach! Bring your National Park Pass! Clean up after yourself. And PLEASE, keep our parks Beautiful! My cell phone dimmed the pictures it was so bright!
  • If you have kids or enjoy watching kids have fun, than White Sands is for you. To watch kids slide down the white sand dunes in all different types of temperature and to hear them laughing and having fun made our day. They rent saucers at the visitor center and your kids will never forget it.
