Nestled on an island of the St. Lawrence River, Boldt Castle and Yacht House tells a tragic story of a wealthy couple who never got to live in their lavish estate. Straddling the border between the United States and Canada, the castle came to life in 1900, constructed by millionaire George C. Boldt (owner of the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City). It was cancelled in 1904 due to the sudden death of his wife, but construction eventually resumed in 1977. Today you can see some incomplete and some finished rooms, a basement with a swimming pool and bowling lanes, hallways with pictures and artifacts, and a collection of wooden boats. Learn about how electricity was obtained in the early 20th century. Take a guided tour and explore the surrounding grounds. This is my first time to Bodlt Castle and I was not disappointed. The renovation is extraordinary. Absolutely beautiful! Well worth the cost of visiting. more »
A MUST if you're in the 1000 Islands. A narrated guide is available via an app, but the self guided tour allows you to take your time and view everything available. The restoration/renovation work is astounding. My personal favorite feature were all the flower beds, which had signage to let you know what plants were used; as an avid gardener, I found that a lovely, most appreciated touch. I look forward to visiting in the future to see how the work progresses. A truly astonishing location.
Beautiful doesn't adequately describe this place. Truly stunning. Deep in history. Beautiful architecture. Stunning inside and outside. If possible go in the nice weather so you can enjoy both the indoors as well as the outdoors. I will definitely go again. Fantastic for young and old.
