Gadsby’s Tavern Museum consists of two buildings, the c. 1785 tavern and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel. The buildings and ice well were constructed by John Wise, but made famous by John Gadsby. He hosted George Washington’s Birthnight Ball, and Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Banquet. Located in the heart of Old Town, the museum offers tours and a wide variety of children’s programs and special events throughout the year. Cool place. Not sure if it is always a self guided tour but there are enough plaques to explain what you are looking at. I do wish there was an audio or a person guiding the tour option. I only met one staff member. She was really informative. Next time I’m in town, I’ll eat in the restaurant next door.
This historic tavern welcomed my group with a special menu. It made it very convenient for the group members to order. The Sally Lunn bread was delicious and our server was excellent. He made sure we had plenty of coffee and water and was very helpful in answering our questions.
