Chapel on the Rock, Allenspark

The Chapel on the Rock is a tourist landmark in Allenspark, Colorado, USA. The chapel is located on the grounds of the Saint Malo Retreat, Conference, and Spiritual Center of the Catholic Archdiocese of Denver. The chapel is open to the public.
In 1999 Boulder County designated the chapel as a historic site.
Pope John Paul II prayed at the chapel during his visit to Denver for World Youth Day in 1993; he blessed the chapel afterwards. The pope later hiked in the surrounding woods and spent some time at the Saint Malo Retreat Center.
In November 2011 the Chapel on the Rock was spared from a devastating fire that destroyed a majority of the retreat center, forcing it to close its doors.
During the rock slides of September 2013 the Chapel on the Rock survived, though much of the surrounding terrain was destroyed.

  • With 38” of fresh snow on the ground, this church was the perfect example of a old mountain church. Worth the snow covered drive up 1000 ft of elevation.  more »
  • A one of a kind place! Not really a lot to see or do, but definitely worth the stop and look. The pope has been there before!  more »

  • If you like visiting churches and chapels, this one shouldn't disappoint. The adjacent lake is mostly dry right now (summer 2019), but we still enjoyed our quick visit. The climb up the hill with a marble statue of Jesus is a short trail with easy to moderate difficulty.
  • This place is amazing and worth the effort to make it there. This chappel was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1993. You will find peace and a perfect spot for retire from the overwhelming rush of the city. Please come and pray here. You will be amazed by the beauty of this place
