The base of the cross is 1,034 feet above sea level and overlooks the Shawnee National Forest. Originally completed in 1963 with a restoration completed in 2010, the cross itself stands 111 feet tall, is 22 feet square at the base, 16 feet square at the top and its arms extend 63 feet horizontally. The exterior white panels covering the cross are 4-inch architectural flat insulated metal panels while the base portion is covered in granite approximately 4-inches thick. The structure sits on a foundation of 730 tons of reinforced concrete that goes down 20 feet to bedrock. The steel framework weighs 170 tons. Each of the four sides of the cross have a word inscribed into the granite: Peace, Hope, Faith, Charity.Arrange your visit to Bald Knob Cross of Peace and discover more family-friendly attractions in Alto Pass using our Alto Pass sightseeing planning app.
Bald Knob Cross of Peace reviews
We stopped here on our day trip from O'Fallon, IL to Sikeston, MO. While most of our drive was through corn and bean fields with small woods in the background, up here its forest as far as one can... more »
We love the view, driving up to the cross and once there. The leaves weren't quite as vibrant this year but the view is still amazing. more »
An impressive place. Beautiful views of the surrounding terrain. Visitors center is clean, well maintained, and staffed by a volunteer. Restrooms are available. The road to the cross winds through wooded countryside. There is an access to the River to River Trail (Godwin Trailhead) about two miles before reaching the cross itself. That section of the trail goes all the way to LaRue Pine Hills near the Mississippi River.
It's always fun driving to Bald Knob Cross because of the winding roads and the beautiful views. There's a tiny park on a bluff along the way with amazing scenery. The cross has been renovated since I was there last. It looks like it was constructed the other day. Make sure you stop in at the Root Beer Saloon in downtown Alto Pass before or after the drive. It's one of a kind and has great root beer floats.
