At Alaska Zoo, see more than 100 birds and mammals up close. Many of the zoo’s residents were rescued from the wild as orphans or after suffering an injury. Visit polar bears, bald eagles, moose, and many other inhabitants of the Alaskan wilderness. The zoo is also home to cold-climate animals from other parts of the world, such as Amur tigers and Tibetan yaks. For a behind-the-scenes look at the animals, book a Special Encounters tour and shadow zoo keepers for the day. A number of species at the zoo hibernate and therefore may be inactive during the winter. During the summer, a free shuttle service is available from downtown Anchorage to the zoo. This zoo is easily walkable. It allows visitors to see bears, seal, musk ox, and coyote up close. This is a small zoo, good for a short visit.

The zoo experience was OK. Nothing to write home about or so spectacular it would deserve five stars. Admission was $10/child and $17/non-resident adult. There were hardly any staff walking around the grounds, which seems unusual for July. Would have been nice to get some questions answered from the kids. There were tigers, bears (black, brown, and polar), seals, otters, eagles, goats, wolves, and more. The grounds are nice and seem natural (like they built the zoo within a natural area).

Amazing zoo! Friendly staff and interactive animals. Can visit year around despite the snow! Make sure to buy a bag of popcorn when you get your tickets that you can walk around and eat before entering. The otters and polar bear were especially interactive. We enjoyed seeing all the native wildlife. Family friendly and a great spot if you have little ones. Disclaimer: DO NOT bring your pet to the zoo. Legal and active working service dog pictured in photos. Medical equipment only permitted.
