The district acquired the property in 1973. The preserve contains relics of 3 mining towns, former coal and sand mines, and offers guided tours of a former sand mine. The 60 miles (97 km) of trails in the Preserve cross rolling foothill terrain covered with grassland, California oak woodland, California mixed evergreen forest, and chaparral.

  • What a great hiking area, many trail options to choose from for all skill levels. Great views. $5.00 dollars to park, $6.00 dollars to go over the Antioch Bridge. Lots of history, the miners tunnels are cool to see. Recommend a hat, sunscreen and water. Looking forward to hiking another section to see the ole towns and Prospect tunnel. Pack a lunch and enjoy.
  • Great hiking, but make sure you know where you are going before you start and bring plenty of water. It gets hot hot hot. Pro tip: if you need to cool down, the entrance to the mine is like a giant refrigerator. It was awesome and very close to town.
