Ride on the highest narrow gauge steam railroad in the United States on Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Jointly owned by the states of Arizona and Colorado, this portion of the railway line was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012. Ride from Chama, New Mexico, to Antonito, Colorado, on this heritage railroad within view of scenic mountainsides and valleys. You'll pass through aspens and Ponderosa pines, ranches, rivers, and dirt roads as you make your way to your destination. Choose between riding in the open gondola car or a regular passenger car. Bring eye protection if you plan to sit outside (cinders from the coal can become airborne), or you can purchase some on the train. You'll stop at the halfway point for a hot buffet lunch or dinner. The station has a souvenir shop and indoor restrooms as well. Use our Antonito road trip website to arrange your visit to Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and other attractions in Antonito.

  • Absolutely loved it!!!!! Coach or Tourist Class, for me, are the best ways to get the most out of this experience. We chose Tourist Class because we could sit at a table and face each other. Which made the trip nice. The cars are beautiful and the open air car affords everyone spectacular views. We liked riding the open air car through the tunnels. Our hostesses were personable and knew a lot about the area. I'd do it again. If you have little kids you may want to take the half day trip.
  • Had a really great time riding the train. The half way lunch was really great lots of options! Highly recommend you go during the fall Aspen tree color change
